The Xbox One controller is arguably one of the best controllers that Microsoft has ever made and some would definitely argue that it is the best controller ever made for any console in history. Be that as it may, it is obvious that the engineers on the Xbox team heard what the gamers said about how the X1 controller should be built and gave us gamers exactly what we wanted.
With the launch of Halo 5 in just over a weeks time, I thought that I would celebrate the launch by not only purchasing the Halo 5: Guardians Limited Edition but also ordering the Xbox One Limited Edition Halo 5: Guardians Master Chief Wireless Controller. While the superb quality and functionality of the X1 controller isn’t at all changed in this Limited Edition controller, the aesthetics of it complements the Halo 5 theme awesomely by showcasing a layout built on the design of the Master Chief himself.
This cool new controller that was released to celebrate the launch of the next game in the Halo series, as far as how the controller works on the inside, is the same controller that you will find that is just the regular X1 controller. There is nothing different or special about how this controller works as far as how the buttons respond or any other added functionality. The only thing that is different here is basically just the color scheme of the controller. The joysticks, buttons, triggers, shoulder buttons and D-pad are the exact same that you would find on any regular X1 controller, just to be clear about that.
The Xbox One Limited Edition Halo 5: Guardians Master Chief Wireless Controller comes packed into the cool clam-shell packaging that Microsoft has been using with all of the X1 accessories to keep that trend going forward. It does a great job of protecting the controller during shipping and my controller was in pristine condition when I opened the box. Some say that presentation is everything and I would have to agree because as I raised the lid of the box, I swear that I could hear the Halo theme music playing in the background as a bright light shone down from the heavens on the new controller I was holding in my hands. I am exaggerating just a little bit here, of course, but it was cool nonetheless opening the box and seeing what an awesome job that was done in designing this piece of Halo 5: Guardians memorabilia.
What is so cool about the Xbox One Limited Edition Halo 5: Guardians Master Chief Wireless Controller, however, is that the design of the controller is done to replicate the look of the Master Chiefs battle armor. For starters, the D-pad and the trigger buttons are the same golden/bronze of Johns helmet visor with the D-pad’s surface being fairly smooth and the triggers being slightly texture to offer a good grip. The joysticks and the body of the controller are military green just like the main parts of John’s battle armor with the edges of the joysticks being slightly textured so that your thumbs get a good grip while playing fast-twitch games. The pads on the areas of the controller where your palms rest are also textured with the pattern on the Master Chiefs armor and are done in a cool hexagon pattern that feels very comfortable when playing.
To add a little more icing to this very tasty Halo 5: Guardians cake, Microsoft included an extra goody in the box as a thank you for making the purchase. Along with the Quick Setup Guide and the Xbox One Accessory Product Manual, the Halo 5: Guardians team threw in a game add-on download from the Xbox Store. The download code unlocks a bonus REQ Pack which includes the Dauntless Visor. What are REQ Packs you ask? Well according to the Halowaypoint.com, “The REQ System rewards players across both our multiplayer experiences. Players will earn REQ Points after each match in Arena or Warzone multiplayer, which can then be redeemed for REQ Packs. So what goodies are in REQ Packs? Each pack contains a variety of requisitions (REQs) in the form of unlockable weapons and armors, skins, assassination animations, and more. In addition, players will receive REQ Packs as rewards when they level up their Spartan Rank (SR) and complete Commendations across multiplayer.”
Overall, I have to admit that I am very impressed with this special edition controller that celebrates the Master Chief and his next mission to help save all of humanity once again. While the controller offers no upgrades in functionality, it is still a cool addition to my collection of Halo themed consoles, controllers and other Halo memorabilia. You can grab the Xbox One Limited Edition Halo 5: Guardians Master Chief Wireless Controller for $69.99 which is exactly what you would pay for a regular X1 controller. The craftsmanship and design of this controller is superb and it feels every bit as sturdy and built with quality as any other accessory from Microsoft. If you get the chance and can afford to drop the cash and are a huge Halo fan like I am, I recommend picking this one up before they are all sold out.
